The new Disney+ series 20/20 Britain's Most Notorious Crime Investigations features the case of Mahek Bukhari, a former TikTok influencer who, along with her mother Ansreen, was convicted of murdering two men in 2023.
The murders
Mahek Bukhari, then 22, and her mother were found guilty of killing Saqib Hussain and Hashim Ijazuddin in February 2022. Saqib had been in a relationship with Ansreen, which ended after about three years. He later contacted Ansreen, demanding money and threatening to expose photos from their relationship.
On the day of the murders, Saqib and Hashim drove to Leicester expecting to meet Ansreen to settle a dispute over £3,000. Instead, Ansreen and Mahek, along with others, arranged to confront them. A car chase ensued on the A46 dual carriageway, during which the victims' car was forced off the road, hit the central reservation and caught fire, killing both men.
Sentencing and appeals
In August 2023, after a 10-week trial, the jury convicted both women of two counts of murder. Mahek was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 31 years and 8 months, reduced on appeal in 2025 to 26 years and 285 days, as judges agreed her young age had not been properly considered. Ansreen received 26 years and nine months. Both remain in prison.
The trailer for the documentary says: "Behind this glamorous social media life, there was something very, very dark." It also quotes Mahek saying: "Watch what I'm going to do to you."
