The Sheep Detectives is a bizarre British comedy that somehow works, featuring an all-star voice cast including Bryan Cranston, Patrick Stewart, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as investigative farm animals. The film, directed by Kyle Balda and written by Craig Mazin, adapts Leonie Swann's German bestseller Three Bags Full, in which a flock of sheep solve their shepherd's murder.
A Surprising Blend of Genres
Mazin, known for the harrowing Chernobyl and The Last of Us, brings unexpected depth to this absurd premise. The film balances melodrama with comedy, creating a Midsomer Murders-lite world with genuine weight. Hugh Jackman stars as farmer George Hardy, who reads detective novels to his flock and has made enemies of every local in the village of Denbrook.
The Plot Unfolds
When George is found dead, the smartest ewe, Lily (voiced by Julia Louis-Dreyfus), must solve the crime while grappling with the concept of death. The sheep have the ability to wipe their memories on command, except for Mopple (Chris O'Dowd), who remembers everything. Lily must communicate her findings to local constable Tim Derry (Nicholas Braun), who struggles with the accent but embodies a deeply British spirit.
New characters arrive, including George's long-lost daughter (Molly Gordon), his lawyer (Emma Thompson), and a meddlesome journalist (Nicholas Galitzine). The village becomes ominously filled with sheep, threatening a cloven-hoofed take on Hitchcock's The Birds.
Star-Studded Voice Cast
Other sheep are voiced by Patrick Stewart, Regina Hall, Bella Ramsey, and Bryan Cranston, who reprises his Isle of Dogs lone ranger role. The film delicately balances tones between Babe: Pig in the City and Clue, while landing a surprisingly funny 'why did the chicken cross the road?' gag.
A Distinctly American View
The film offers an American perspective on British rural life, with a cheery fairytale colour palette. It names fighting rams after the Kray twins (voiced by Brett Goldstein) and overlooks Anglican theology, but remains a breezy, easy murder mystery.
