John Boyne has confirmed a sequel to his 2006 novel The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, titled All the Broken Places. The new book, aimed at adults, picks up the story of Gretel, the older sister of Bruno, the original novel's protagonist. The narrative shifts between present-day Mayfair and Gretel's past as she grapples with guilt and complicity in the Holocaust.
Gretel, now an elderly woman living in a comfortable flat, spies on her wealthy neighbours, a film producer and his family. As she confronts her memories of Auschwitz and her role in her brother's death, the novel explores themes of atonement, secrecy, and the long reach of war. The plot thickens as Gretel and the producer both harbour dark secrets.
Boyne began drafting All the Broken Places immediately after finishing its predecessor. The book has been praised for its gripping narrative and well-honed exploration of guilt and cycles of grief. It forces readers to consider whether violence can ever be justified to prevent greater evil, serving as a defence of literature's role in illuminating humanity's darkest aspects.
