Sydney Sweeney made a triumphant appearance at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where her performance in the boxing biopic Christy prompted immediate Oscar speculation. The 27-year-old actress portrays Christy Salters Martin, a female boxing pioneer known as the 'Coal Miner’s Daughter' who rose to prominence in the nascent sport.
The film, directed by David Michôd, received a rapturous reception from the TIFF audience on Friday. Sweeney stood on stage alongside Martin, describing the experience as 'a dream come true, as an actor, as a person.' The story focuses on Martin’s career and personal struggles, including her abusive marriage to trainer Jim Martin, who attempted to kill her in 2010. Ben Foster plays Jim Martin, and his performance was also praised.
Sweeney’s portrayal, which required short dark hair and a more muscular physique, marks her grittiest and least glamorous role to date. She trained three times daily for two to three months, working with a boxing coach, nutritionist and weight trainers, while consuming 'a lot of Chick-fil-A, a lot of milkshakes, a lot of protein shakes' to build bulk.
During the festival, Sweeney deflected questions about her recent American Eagle jeans advertisement campaign, which critics accused of glorifying whiteness. She told Vanity Fair: 'I’m not there to talk about jeans. The movie’s about Christy and that’s what I’ll be there to talk about.' Martin praised Sweeney for capturing her dual personality—the bombastic boxer and the private survivor who now helps domestic violence victims.
Christy is co-produced by Black Bear and marks its first foray into distribution. The film is set for theatrical release on 7 November. Sweeney also serves as a producer on the project, with Martin acting as consultant.
