Prime Video's Sterling Point is an original teen drama, not based on a book. The eight-part series, created by Megan Park, follows 17-year-old Annie Jacobson (Ella Rubin) as she inherits her grandfather's island in Canada and uncovers family secrets.
An Original Concept
Unlike many of Prime Video's Young Adult shows, Sterling Point is not adapted from a bestselling novel. It is an original concept by Park, who also serves as director, co-showrunner, and executive producer.
Park told Teen Vogue about her approach: "[When we were making Sterling Point] I wasn't necessarily thinking about, Oh, I love Dawson's Creek. How can we make this Dawson's Creek? But we did talk about, in the writer's room, these characters that are so beloved, so real, nuanced, complicated, and likable; how do we draw on those elements and infuse them in a bigger way?"
Finding Inspiration
She noted the enduring appeal of coming-of-age stories, saying, "There's always going to be space and a desire for these coming-of-age shows, because there's always a new generation coming of age—and it's always fun to go back and escape to. You turn on Netflix and it's, like, One Tree Hill and Gossip Girl. They're all trending again."
Setting and Filming
Sterling Point is set in Canada, but the location is fictional. Filming took place in Toronto and the Muskoka Lakes region. Park, who is Canadian, grew up spending summers in Muskoka and wanted the show to reflect that experience.
Speaking to The Nightly, she said: "Cottage life in the summer is a really huge part of Canadian culture. We can really show Muskoka for what it really is, and talk about some of the things that are happening up there affecting the locals and the community."
