Production Underway in New York
Richard Gere, 76, has been spotted with his arms around Diana Silvers, 28, while filming their upcoming movie Asymmetry in New York City. The two actors are starring in an age-gap romance based on Lisa Halliday's acclaimed novel of the same name.
The story follows an unexpected romance between two people at very different stages in their lives, drawing comparisons to Halliday's own relationship with author Philip Roth, who was 45 years her senior. Former President Barack Obama named Asymmetry one of his favorite books of 2018.
Fan Backlash Over Age Gap
After footage showed Gere and Silvers getting cosy on set, some film fans expressed disapproval. Social media users like @danameyerson and @jeseniagrams called it 'gross'. @Msjudithgeorge wrote: 'I like Richard Gere. But the age difference is exhausting.'
Others, such as @gabbydlgarza, agreed they like the American Gigolo star but criticized the trend: 'I'm so sick of all the old man and young woman propaganda. Give me a rom com with a much older woman and a younger man.'
Film Details and Creative Team
The film is directed by Oscar-winner Edward Zwick, who co-wrote the script with Halliday and Marshall Herskovitz. Producing are Zwick and Herskovitz of Bedford Falls Company, along with Clay Pecorin of Rainmaker Films and FilmNation Entertainment, who are co-financing.
According to the synopsis from FilmNation, the story follows Alice (Silvers), a young editorial assistant in New York, who meets world-renowned 70-year-old author Ezra (Gere) in Central Park. Their eye contact sparks a connection leading to a secret relationship that risks exposure.
Author's Reaction
Halliday expressed gratitude for the adaptation: 'It has been a pleasure and a privilege to work with Ed and Marshall on transposing Alice and Ezra's story for the screen. I am enormously grateful to them for their humor, ingenuity, courage, compassion, and dedication.'
