Project Hail Mary Soars with $54.5 Million Second Weekend as Horror Genre Hits Saturation
Project Hail Mary Holds Strong, Horror Films Face Oversaturation

Project Hail Mary Maintains Strong Box Office Hold in Second Weekend

The sci-fi adventure film Project Hail Mary has continued its impressive performance at the box office, securing a robust $54.5 million in its second weekend. According to studio estimates released on Sunday, this strong hold adds to the long-term prospects of what is currently the year's biggest cinematic hit.

Sci-Fi Success Story

Directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller and starring Ryan Gosling, Project Hail Mary experienced only a 32% decline from its opening weekend. This marks the best non-franchise opening since 2023's Oppenheimer. The film, produced with a budget nearing $200 million, has now grossed $300.8 million worldwide in just two weeks.

With no significant new competition and retaining premium format screens, Project Hail Mary is on an enviable trajectory. Its second weekend hold even surpassed that of Oppenheimer, which collected $46.7 million in its follow-up frame.

Horror Genre Faces Oversaturation

Meanwhile, the weekend's top new release, the horror film They Will Kill You, debuted to a disappointing $5 million for Warner Bros. Starring Zazie Beetz, the gory R-rated film follows a woman who becomes a sacrificial offering after applying for a maid position at an apartment complex.

While not catastrophic for a film with a modest $20 million budget, this result suggests theaters may have become oversaturated with horror content. David A. Gross of FranchiseRe noted that a new horror film has been released every weekend for the past 14 weeks.

This glut includes last week's Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, which has earned $16.3 million domestically so far, and IFC's Forbidden Fruits, a horror-comedy about witches working at a Texas mall that debuted with $1.2 million this weekend.

Market Analysis and Forecasts

Despite the oversaturation, Gross forecasts horror films will account for approximately $2.1 billion in North American ticket revenue in 2026, down from $2.75 billion last year. While horror remains popular with audiences and relatively inexpensive to produce, the genre may be approaching overkill.

In contrast, family movies continue to thrive. Pixar's original film Hoppers remained in second place with $12.2 million in its fourth weekend, accumulating $297.6 million globally. However, it faces stiff competition next weekend from Universal Pictures' The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, expected to have the biggest opening of 2026.
