Project Hail Mary Blasts Off with Record $80.5 Million Opening Weekend
Studio estimates released on Sunday confirm that Amazon MGM's science fiction epic "Project Hail Mary" has soared to the top of the North American box office charts, amassing an impressive $80.5 million in ticket sales during its debut weekend. This performance not only surpasses expectations but also establishes a new benchmark for the studio, eclipsing its previous best opening of $58 million set by "Creed III" in 2023.
A Landmark Achievement for Non-Franchise Cinema
The film's strong opening marks a significant moment for the industry, drawing audiences to cinemas in numbers unseen for a non-franchise release since Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" in 2023. According to box office tracker EntTelligence, this translates to approximately 5 million ticket buyers, highlighting the movie's broad appeal. Notably, "Project Hail Mary" now ranks as the second-largest opening for a non-franchise film in recent history, trailing only "Oppenheimer," which debuted with $82.4 million.
In the past decade, only three non-franchise movies have opened above $70 million, with "Project Hail Mary" joining the ranks of "Oppenheimer" and Jordan Peele's "Us." Furthermore, the film has outperformed other acclaimed space operas in their opening weekends, including:
- "The Martian" (2015): $54.3 million
- "Gravity" (2013): $55.6 million
- "Interstellar" (2014): $47.5 million
Strong Audience Reception and Production Details
Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, "Project Hail Mary" features Ryan Gosling as a character who awakens alone on a spaceship with fragmented memories, tasked with a mission to save the sun from extinction. The PG-13 rated film opened on 4,007 screens across North America and has garnered positive reviews, with PostTrak exit polls revealing that 83% of audiences would "definitely recommend" it to friends. The audience demographic skewed slightly male at 57%, with 55% under the age of 35.
With a production budget estimated around $200 million—roughly double that of "Oppenheimer"—the film's success is bolstered by strong word-of-mouth and high demand for premium formats. Premium large format screens contributed 56% of the weekend's gross, with IMAX alone accounting for 24%.
"We believe deeply in the Hail Mary, and it's clear audiences do as well," stated Kevin Wilson, Amazon MGM Studios' head of domestic distribution. "What we're seeing in theaters—the energy, the exit scores, the word-of-mouth—is everything we believed this film would deliver."
