Fans of jump scares and chilling thrillers are urged to watch the new five-part series Possession, now streaming on Sky and NOW. The supernatural thriller stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Claudia, an ambitious bi-racial lawyer whose work takes her to Jamaica, where she discovers that the disputed estate, Hope Hill, is the very place that haunts her nightmares.
A Haunting Discovery
The former plantation has a brutal past, and Claudia uncovers injustices that are still present. Sky describes the series as "a gripping supernatural thriller that blends eerie mystery with the vibrant energy of Jamaica, following one woman’s journey into long-buried secrets, identity and the past’s enduring hold on the present."
Created and written by Karla Crome, known for Something Very Bad is Going to Happen, the series also stars Jonny Lee Miller (The Crown), Sheldon Shepherd (Bob Marley: One Love), and Bel Powley (The Morning Show).
Audience and Critical Reception
Fans have already shared their excitement on YouTube after the trailer's release, with one commenting, "This looks great without giving too much away. I will be tuned in." Another added, "Looks amazing," while a third wrote, "I see Gugu, I click."
The series was filmed in both Bristol and Jamaica, and Sky called it "an ambitious genre-bending series that boldly confronts the enduring legacy of colonialism, marrying shadowy intrigue with the pulsating energy of the Caribbean."
Content and Ratings
Due to disturbing content, Possession has been rated 15, except for episode three, which is rated 18 and suitable only for adults.
Mbatha-Raw spoke to The Guardian about the filming experience, saying, "We wanted everything to feel as real as possible – the beauty of the colour, music and smells of Jamaica, but also its darkness." She added, "We filmed at a real plantation house – all the scenes in the grounds, with enslaved people working on the land – real people lived and died there. Driving up the hill towards the house, you could really feel the weight of history."
