Mandy Patinkin has paid tribute to the late director Rob Reiner, describing his friendship with actors Billy Crystal and Christopher Guest as 'the glue of their lives' during the filming of The Princess Bride. The 73-year-old actor appeared on The View alongside Patti Lupone, who became emotional while remembering Reiner.
Patinkin recalled travelling on a bus between locations and watching Reiner, Crystal and Guest discuss baseball statistics with encyclopedic knowledge. He said he was struck by the deep bond between the three men, noting that their friendship was central to their lives.
In a statement released the day before, Patinkin reflected on a specific scene from the 1987 film. He said Reiner repeatedly asked him to 'do less' during the scene where his character Inigo Montoya kills the six-fingered man. Patinkin later realised Reiner wanted less anger to allow his 'broken heart to be felt'.
Lupone described Reiner as 'generous' and said his death was 'hard to believe'. The couple were found stabbed to death in their Los Angeles home. Their son, Nick Reiner, has been arrested and charged with both murders.
