In a significant shake-up for Hollywood's most prestigious awards, the Oscars are introducing their first new category in over two decades. The 98th Academy Awards in 2026 will feature a new honour for achievement in casting, bringing the total number of awards presented during the live broadcast to 24.
A Landmark Addition to the Ceremony
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences confirmed to The Associated Press that the new casting prize will be part of the main event on March 15, 2026. While the academy's board of governors announced the creation of this award last year, it was only recently confirmed that it would be featured in the official televised ceremony.
This marks the first permanent category addition since best animated feature film was established in 2001. The academy had previously floated a 'popular film Oscar,' but that category never materialised. In another forward-looking move, the organisation has also revealed plans to introduce a stunt design award starting with the 100th Oscars in 2028.
How the New Award Will Work
The process for the new casting Oscar will mirror that of several other specialised categories. Members of the academy's casting directors branch will first narrow the field to a shortlist of ten films. This method is also used for categories including documentary, international film, makeup & hairstyling, score, song, sound, visual effects, and the three short film awards.
The official nominations will be announced on January 22, 2026. Early predictions for potential contenders across categories include films such as One Battle After Another, Hamnet, Sinners, Wicked: For Good, and Sentimental Value for the coveted Best Picture award.
Host and Broadcast Details Confirmed
In other major news for the 98th ceremony, comedian Conan O'Brien has already agreed to take on hosting duties. The broadcast will air live on ABC on March 15 at 7 p.m. ET.
The upcoming ceremony will build on the success of the 2025 Oscars, where the film Anora emerged as the top winner, securing five awards in total. Mikey Madison won Best Actress for her role, while director Sean Baker made history by winning four awards for his work on the film: Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing, and the top prize of Best Picture.
