Overlord, the 2018 war-horror film, is currently the tenth most-watched title on Netflix UK. It's not for the faint-hearted, but fans say it holds up as one of the best war films.
D-Day mission goes horribly wrong
Set on the eve of D-Day during the Second World War, the story follows American paratroopers who drop behind enemy lines to destroy a radio transmitter inside a fortified church. As they near their target, they stumble upon an underground Nazi laboratory. A sinister experiment has produced an army of the undead, and the outnumbered soldiers are forced into a vicious battle for survival.
Creative team and cast
The film was produced by J.J. Abrams and directed by Julius Avery, who later helmed The Pope's Exorcist. The screenplay was written by Billy Ray and Mark L. Smith, whose credits include The Hunger Games, Terminator: Dark Fate, The Revenant and Twisters. Smith also created Netflix's American Primeval and Untamed. The cast includes Wyatt Russell and Joseph Quinn, both of whom have since appeared in Marvel films.
Critical and fan response
Overlord earned an 82% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. One critic described it as "Saving Private Ryan meets Resident Evil". Another reviewer wrote: "Overall, Overlord is a smart film that blends war and horror together effortlessly, resulting in a truly terrifying experience."
Fans have been equally enthusiastic. One posted: "Outrageous horror action flick, pretty much what you would expect by JJ Abrams. The special effects were great & it was fun watching Nazis get blown up." Another fan admitted to watching the film four times and said it still "shocks me to the core". Others have compared it to the video game series Wolfenstein.
