Netflix Acquires Global Rights to Animated Film 'In Waves'

Netflix has secured global rights outside France to the animated feature 'In Waves', marking its first major acquisition at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival. The film, which opened the Critics' Week section to rave reviews, is an adaptation of AJ Dungo's 2019 graphic memoir.

Directed by Phuong Mai Nguyen, the romance features voice performances from Oscar-nominated Stephanie Hsu and BAFTA winner Will Sharpe. The story follows AJ, a shy teenager who loves skateboarding and drawing, and Kristen, a passionate surfer, as they fall in love and face Kristen's sudden illness.

Netflix won the project in a competitive bidding war, with the deal rumoured to be in the mid-seven figure range. The acquisition was negotiated by Anonymous Content, CAA Media Finance and Charades on behalf of the filmmakers. Producers include Priscilla Bertin and Judith Nora of Silex Films, with David Levine, Yohann Comte, Carole Baraton, Pierre Mazars, Sharpe, Hsu, and Nick Shumaker serving as executive producers.
