Cameron Diaz and Stephen Merchant are set to headline an untitled romantic comedy for Amazon MGM Studios, with Merchant directing from a script co-written with John Butler.
The film follows a workaholic British man (Merchant) employed at a luxury New York hotel who requires a wife for appearances. He makes a deal with a struggling stand-up comic (Diaz) in desperate need of health insurance. Their fake marriage begins as a transaction but evolves into an unexpected romance.
Producers include Lee Eisenberg, Merchant, and Point Grey Pictures' Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, and Josh Fagen. Natalie Sandy serves as executive producer. Point Grey and Amazon MGM previously collaborated on the hit series The Boys, Gen V, and Invincible.
Diaz, known for My Best Friend's Wedding, There's Something About Mary, and Charlie's Angels, returns to the rom-com genre after a hiatus. Merchant, co-creator of The Office and star of The Outlaws, brings his comedic talents to the project.
