Julia Roberts has confirmed that a sequel to the 1997 rom-com My Best Friend’s Wedding is in the works. The actress, 57, revealed during an interview with Variety that she has been approached about reprising her role as food critic Julianne.
When asked about reports of a follow-up, Roberts simply replied: “They’re talking to me.” The film’s director Luca Guadagnino, who is currently working with Roberts on the psychological thriller After the Hunt, added that he would take charge of the sequel “in a second.”
Rumours of a second film first emerged in July when Dermot Mulroney, Roberts’ co-star in the original, hinted at the project. However, he later admitted he knew little, saying: “Last I heard, quote, lawyers were talking, unquote.” Later that month, Variety reported that Past Lives filmmaker Celine Song had been set to write the screenplay, though she is not in talks to direct.
The original film, which grossed nearly $300 million worldwide, followed Julianne’s attempts to sabotage her best friend Michael’s wedding after realising she is in love with him. It earned three Golden Globe nominations and remains a fan favourite from Roberts’ 1990s rom-com heyday.
Roberts has previously expressed interest in a sequel. In 2018, she told Entertainment Weekly she imagined a plot where Michael and his wife Kimmy (Cameron Diaz) “probably have kids”, adding: “And then there’s me and Rupert [Everett].” She has also praised the enduring legacy of the film, noting the chemistry among the cast.
