Michael B Jordan executes a daring heist to steal Vincent van Gogh’s Sunflowers in a new trailer for The Thomas Crown Affair. The upcoming romantic heist film is a second remake of the 1968 original.
Jordan plays the title character, a billionaire who steals a painting and is pursued by an insurance investigator, leading to a cat-and-mouse game. The movie, which Jordan directed, produced and starred in, is billed as a “visually breathtaking, sensual and unexpectedly moving heist thriller”.
Trailer Details
The 90-second trailer opens with Crown in a white suit, walking up a grand staircase. A voiceover says he has been “taking risks my entire life… but last night was different”. He enters a secret room of paintings and scales a building. Later, he races against Sir Kenneth Branagh at a track, then admires Van Gogh’s artwork in a dark room.
Throughout, Crown teases the heist: “I felt alive… my heart was racing… every step was part of a plan… things slowed down… it was silent… and I was surprised… how easy it was.” He adds, “But I’m not finished yet… that’s what excites me.”
Things take a turn after he flips his car and is watched by a woman played by Adria Arjona, with whom he appears to have a romantic entanglement. She tells him, “I know exactly who you are.” Crown also fights an unnamed opponent and later appears to go on the run after Sir Kenneth notices the missing painting.
Jordan’s Vision
Speaking to Variety last year, Jordan – who won the Oscar for best actor for Sinners – said he “didn’t want a reboot” but a reimagination. He explained, “The first two films were about rich white guys stealing for fun. That doesn’t land today. Ours is more personal. The stakes are higher. Still got the fashion, romance.”
The cast also includes Lily Gladstone, Danai Gurira and Pilou Asbaek. The score is by Grammy-winning musician Jon Batiste.
History of the Remake
The original 1968 film starred Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway. It was nominated for two Academy Awards, winning best original song for Michel Legrand’s The Windmills Of Your Mind. A remake followed in 1999 starring Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo.
The Thomas Crown Affair is set for cinema release on March 5 2027.
