Mel Gibson's New Christ Film Sparks Outrage With Cast Reboot
Mel Gibson's Christ Film Sequel Sparks Fan Outrage

Hollywood star Mel Gibson was spotted enjoying a casual day off in Rome this Monday, taking a break from filming his highly anticipated biblical sequel, Resurrection Of The Christ. The actor and director caused a stir when he paused for a cheerful conversation with a group of local nuns outside a supermarket.

Backlash Over New Cast

Over two decades after the monumental success of The Passion of the Christ, Gibson, 69, is returning to direct the follow-up. However, the project has been met with significant fan outrage after it was confirmed that the original stars, Jim Caviezel and Monica Bellucci, would not be reprising their iconic roles.

The decision to recast the entire film was driven by the practical challenge of the actors' ages. A production source explained to Variety that using CGI for de-ageing would have been prohibitively expensive and technically complex.

Meet the New Faces of the Sequel

Stepping into the role of Jesus Christ is Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen, 36, known for his work in the historical drama The Last Kingdom. The role of Mary Magdalene will be played by Cuban actress Mariela Garriga, 36, who recently appeared opposite Tom Cruise in the Mission: Impossible franchise.

The supporting cast also features a host of new talent. Polish actress Kasia Smutniak, 46, takes on the part of Mary, while Italian star Pier Luigi Pasino will portray the Apostle Peter. English actor Rupert Everett, 66, is also set for a small but significant role.

Fan Reaction and Industry Logic

The recasting news ignited a firestorm on social media, with many fans expressing their disappointment. One user called the move 'blasphemous work', while another lamented, 'Caviezel must be devastated.' Many had hoped to see the original actors return with the aid of visual effects.

Despite the backlash, some commentators understood the logistical reasoning. One fan noted online, 'Now, it makes sense why the entire cast was replaced... Gibson is a great director. He can still deliver a solid film with any actor.' The film will continue production in Rome, charting the story of the three days following Christ's crucifixion.
