Mateus Fernandes scored a brilliant goal on his Tottenham debut, a stunning volley from outside the box against MK Dons in their pre-season opener. The Portuguese midfielder, 22, joined Spurs from relegated West Ham for £85m, having also been linked with Manchester United.
United's Alternative Signings
Manchester United opted not to match West Ham's asking price for Fernandes, instead paying a combined £85m for Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos from Aston Villa and Chelsea respectively. While United may be satisfied with their own business, Fernandes' early form could give them pause for thought.
Fernandes Reflects on His Goal
Speaking about his strike, Fernandes said: “It was great, no? The second I did the goal, I thought no I can’t shoot again because if I miss, they will say I am lucky. It’s given me confidence for the next game, for the next days. The most important thing is to play well, control the game. In the last minutes, I was so tired so I need to improve this as well but it’s very important for me to play well.”
He added: “It was my favourite goal of my career. It was fantastic. It is number one by a mile, the second one was last season. I need to do this more times, to score a goal and shoot outside of the box. I know I can do it so this gives me confidence for the days ahead.”
Pre-season Preparations and Ambitions
On preparations for the 2026/27 season, Fernandes said: “The weather in England it’s so good, not too tough. I think it’s important for me to speak with the manager and with the guys. Everyone is incredible. I’m very happy to be here. I know I’m playing for a massive club. We are playing for the top of the Premier League and the levels need to be big. We need to train hard to arrive in the games and compete with the opponents.”
Asked about his goals at Spurs, Fernandes said: “As an individual, I want to do better than last season. I know I need to score more goals like today, get more assists. Be more constant on my game. Playing for Tottenham, maybe that pressure can be even more. I need to be better in many aspects and this is the reason I am here. I know Mr De Zerbi will improve me and the team and now it’s just us against the world.”
