Kaia Gerber, the daughter of supermodel Cindy Crawford, has become the latest celebrity offspring to weigh in on the nepotism debate, arguing that her transition from modelling to acting is not simply a matter of connections.
In an interview with Elle, the 21-year-old acknowledged her privilege, recalling her mother's joke: 'If I could call and book a Chanel campaign, it would be for me and not you.' However, Gerber insisted that securing acting roles requires more than a famous surname.
'No artist is going to sacrifice their vision for someone’s kid,' she said. 'That just isn’t how art is made, and what I’m interested in is art. Also, no one wants to work with someone who’s annoying, and not easy to work with, and not kind.'
Gerber added that while nepotism is prevalent, 'if it actually was what people make it out to be, we’d see even more of it.' Her comments follow similar defences from Lily-Rose Depp, Lottie Moss and Lily Allen, as well as actress Jamie Lee Curtis, who called the conversation 'designed to try to diminish and denigrate and hurt'.
On the other side, Ireland Baldwin and Allison Williams are among the few beneficiaries who have acknowledged that the label is likely to persist the more celebrities bristle at it.
