A sequel to the 1997 comedy My Best Friend's Wedding is in development, with Celine Song attached to write the screenplay. The film, which starred Julia Roberts as a food critic plotting to sabotage her best friend's wedding, earned nearly $300m at the global box office.
Song, known for the Oscar-nominated drama Past Lives and the upcoming romantic comedy Materialists, has been hired by Sony as the project enters early development. News of the sequel emerged after Dermot Mulroney, who co-starred in the original, hinted at discussions during promotion for his Netflix series The Hunting Wives.
Julia Roberts has previously expressed interest in reprising her role. She was last seen in Ticket to Paradise and will star in Luca Guadagnino's After the Hunt and the thriller Panic Carefully with Elizabeth Olsen.
The sequel joins a wave of 1990s film follow-ups, including Happy Gilmore 2, Freakier Friday, and a Clueless TV series.
