Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are set to reprise their roles as Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark in the upcoming Hunger Games prequel, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the pair's return, suggesting they will likely appear in a flash-forward sequence, as their characters were married with children at the end of Mockingjay – Part 2.
The film, currently in production, is the sixth instalment in the franchise and the second prequel, following 2023's The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. It is adapted from Suzanne Collins' 2025 novel and directed by Francis Lawrence, who has helmed all but one of the previous Hunger Games films.
Sunrise on the Reaping is set 24 years before the original Hunger Games and 40 years after The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. The story centres on Haymitch Abernathy, portrayed by Woody Harrelson in the original films, as a tribute in the 50th Hunger Games. The cast also includes Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee and Ralph Fiennes as a younger President Snow.
Lawrence is currently starring in Die My Love, for which she received a Golden Globe nomination, while Hutcherson appears in Five Nights at Freddy's 2. Filming on Sunrise on the Reaping began in summer 2025 and wrapped in November, with a release date set for November 2026.
