ITV's new true crime drama Believe Me delves into the story of John Worboys, the so-called 'black cab rapist', focusing on the victims' fight for justice and the Metropolitan Police's failure to investigate their allegations. The four-part series premieres on Sunday, May 10, at 9pm on ITV, with the second episode airing the following evening. Episodes three and four will be broadcast on Sunday, May 17, and Monday, May 18, respectively. All episodes are available to stream on ITVX.
The cast is led by Daniel Mays (Line of Duty, A Thousand Blows) as John Worboys. Victims are portrayed by Aimee-Ffion Edwards (Peaky Blinders) as Sarah, Miriam Petche (Industry) as Carrie Symonds, and Aasiya Shah (Raised by Wolves) as Laila. Other cast members include Alexa Davies, Kae Alexander, Laurie Kynaston, and Philippa Dunne.
The drama depicts how Worboys would lure women into his taxi after a night out, claiming he had won money at a casino or lottery, then press them to drink champagne laced with drugs, leaving them unconscious. However, the series places greater emphasis on the victims' experiences of feeling disbelieved by police when they reported the attacks.
The synopsis for episode one reads: 'Sarah Adams is given a drugged drink by a taxi driver and is certain she was raped. After months of Sarah feeling disbelieved by the police, her case is dropped and the man is free to attack again.' Worboys was convicted in 2009 of offences including sexual assault and drugging with intent against 12 women between 2006 and 2008, with many more suspected victims.
