ITV launches gripping new crime drama The Galway Bay Murders

ITV is launching a gripping new thriller. Six-part crime series The Galway Bay Murders will land on ITV1 and ITVX. The nights are drawing in and it's the perfect time of year to sit down and cosy up on the sofa for a binge-worthy drama.

ITV has been responsible for providing some of the best dramas over the years, including Broadchurch, Mr Bates vs The Post Office and most recently, The Blame. However, a new drama filmed in Ireland will launch on the streaming platform.

Star-Studded Cast and Production Team

Orange Is the New Black star Kate Mulgrew joins The Commitments actor Colm Meaney for the series. From Two Cities Television, the producers behind hit police drama Blue Lights, the new series transports viewers to Ireland’s rugged west coast.

A shocking murder draws a former New York detective into a dangerous investigation. Set against the landscape of Connemara, The Galway Bay Murders follows seasoned NYPD detective Nora Savage (Kate Mulgrew), who arrives in the west of Ireland hoping to escape a traumatic past and find a quieter life.

Murder Mystery in Connemara

However, her plans are shattered when the body of a young woman is discovered in a bog, drawing Nora into a complex murder investigation alongside the local Garda team.

As the investigation deepens, the detectives uncover a trail leading to Free Farm, an ambitious organisation where young people live and work together on sustainable farming and scientific research. Beneath its seemingly idyllic exterior lies a tangled web of secrets, competing loyalties and hidden motives, with potentially devastating consequences.

Cast and Creator Insights

Combining a compelling murder mystery with richly drawn characters, dark humour and spectacular scenery, the six-part drama explores how far people will go to protect their secrets and the lengths one woman will go to uncover the truth.

The ensemble cast also includes John Connors (The Gentlemen, Irish Blood), India Mullen (Normal People, Under Salt Marsh), Cillian O’Sullivan (Daredevil: Born Again, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds) and Jack Rowan (A Town Called Malice, Wreck).

Darren Nartey, head of content acquisitions at ITV, said: “The Galway Bay Murders is precisely the kind of bold, high-calibre drama our audiences love. Eithne Verling has crafted a completely magnetic crime thriller, with an outstanding cast led by Kate Mulgrew and Colm Meaney, a compelling central mystery and the stunning backdrop of Ireland’s west coast. We’re thrilled to partner with ITV Studios, Two Cities Television and RTÉ to bring this captivating new series to the ITV audience”

Creator's Debut and Release Details

The Galway Bay Murders is created and written by Eithne Verling, a former archaeologist and museum curator whose deep personal connection to the region informs the drama’s distinctive storytelling.

The series marks Verling’s television writing debut, with all six episodes written specifically for Mulgrew following a chance meeting between the pair in Galway that developed into a close friendship. The Galway Bay Murders will air on ITV1 and be available to stream on ITVX.
