Irena's Vow: True Holocaust Story on Netflix

Set against the backdrop of the Second World War, the 2023 Netflix drama 'Irena's Vow' powerfully captures the courage of everyday people facing unimaginable circumstances. The war film transports viewers back to the 1940s during the Holocaust, when Nazi forces were occupying Poland and Jewish people faced brutal persecution.

Irena's Vow tells the remarkable story of a courageous nurse who risked everything to shelter and protect Jewish people by concealing them in the basement of the household where she was employed. Her employer, who had taken her on as a housekeeper, happened to be a German Army officer known as Major Eduard Rügemer.

A Story of Heroism and Sacrifice

Her tale is amongst countless acts of heroism from those who selflessly placed their own lives in danger to rescue others, and has been immortalised in both this film and the Broadway production of the same name, both penned by Dan Gordon.

The film stars Sophie Nélisse as Irena Gut Opdyke, best known for her role in Yellowjackets, and also stars in The Book Thief. She portrays the real-life heroine who was subsequently honoured as a Righteous Among the Nations in Jerusalem for saving 12 Jews.

Critical Acclaim and Viewer Reactions

The actress has garnered considerable acclaim for her performance in the 2023 production, with one Rotten Tomatoes review hailing it as "outstanding". Joining her on screen is a cast that includes Dougray Scott, Agata Turkot, Andrzej Seweryn and Irena Melcer.

Another impressed viewer shared: "Wow what a powerful, beautiful story. I'd never heard of this, and I do so like that it was based on true events. It also had exceptional acting by all. Give it a look, I'm sure you'll like it."

Graphic Content and Emotional Impact

Meanwhile, one fan of the film warned about its graphic content, writing: "Superb film! Very intense violence in a couple of places ... thus the "R" rating is justified . However , the depiction of Nazi beastial anger seems authentic."

The film's underlying message has deeply moved many viewers, who are often astonished to discover it draws from the real-life experiences of genuine Jewish individuals and their protector, Irene Opdyke.

The personal sacrifices she endured were far from straightforward, as once Rügemer discovered the 12 Jews she had been concealing, he chose to guard her secret, but only in return for a sexual relationship.

She eventually managed to escape the country to an allied Germany, before meeting her future husband and emigrating to America to begin a new chapter in her life.

Radio Times reviewed the film, claiming: "Excellent performances - especially from Yellowjackets star Sophie Nélisse as Irena and Dougray Scott as her Nazi boss - elevate some skimpily scripted characters, but the compelling nature of an almost unbelievable true story keeps you gripped."

Another critic compared Irena's Schindler's List for its "vignettes of goodness and hope". Irena's Vow is streaming now on Netflix.
