Despite a mixed critical reception upon its 2018 release, the action thriller 'Hunter Killer' has developed a loyal fanbase and is set to air on Film4 tonight. Starring Gerard Butler and Gary Oldman, the film follows a US Navy SEALs unit and submarine crew as they attempt to rescue the Russian president after his abduction during a military coup.
Adapted from Don Keith and George Wallace's novel 'Firing Point', the film centres on Commander Joe Glass (Butler), who is tasked with locating a missing US submarine. Simultaneously, a Navy SEALs team on land witnesses the coup and the president's kidnapping. Both groups must work together to prevent a potential war.
Critics were divided at launch, with some dismissing it as a 'muddled, disjointed non-thriller' while others praised it as an 'old-fashioned action thriller' with relentless pace. However, fans have taken to Rotten Tomatoes to defend the film, with one calling it a 'primo movie' and another criticising reviewers for 'overly critical and tiring rhetoric'.
