Hugh Jackman's Unrecognisable Robin Hood Revealed in A24's Gritty Trailer
Hugh Jackman's Unrecognisable Robin Hood in A24 Trailer

Hugh Jackman appears almost completely unrecognisable in the first official trailer for A24's upcoming medieval drama, 'The Death of Robin Hood'. The actor, 57, sports a long grey wig and a thick, burly beard, presenting a starkly different version of the legendary outlaw.

A Dark and Grizzled Outlaw

The trailer, which premiered on Tuesday, immediately establishes a sombre, gritty tone. Jackman's Robin Hood is introduced as a limping, battle-weary loner, far removed from the heroic archer of folklore. By a bonfire, he confides in a mystery woman, played by Jodie Comer, revealing a brutal truth. "People speak of Robin Hood. Tell his stories. They're all lies," he states. "He was not a hero. He were a murderous brigand. I am the outlaw, Robin Hood."

This version of the character is haunted by his violent past, describing his actions as a curse. "I've killed so many. I could not give you a count," he admits, showcasing a narrative that deconstructs the myth to explore the man beneath, scarred by regret and bloodshed.

Plot Details and Star-Studded Cast

Directed by Michael Sarnoski (known for Pig and A Quiet Place: Day One), the film sees Robin Hood rescued by Comer's character, who cares for a group of orphans who have suffered 'terrible things'. In a poignant moment that has drawn comparisons to Jackman's 2017 film Logan, his Robin Hood offers to make a bow for a traumatised young girl for protection, vowing, "I'll keep you safe."

The impressive supporting cast includes Bill Skarsgård, Murray Bartlett, and Noah Jupe. Jackman, who also produced the project, praised Sarnoski's vision in an interview with Entertainment Weekly last month. He emphasised the film's human core, stating, "Robin Hood is a real man in our story. With all the scars, the pain, the regret, and yes, the love. Mike's story has weight to it. For me, it's beautiful and human."

Behind the Scenes and What's Next

Fans also got a glimpse of Jackman's physical commitment to the role, with a shirtless scene by a lake in Northern Ireland highlighting his famously muscular physique. The actor, who is famously just an Oscar away from achieving EGOT status, shared a behind-the-scenes timelapse video on Instagram after wrapping filming on March 25. The clip showed makeup artist Pamela S. Westmore and hairstylist Sean Flanigan shaving off his real moustache.

In his post, Jackman expressed gratitude for the "wonderful experience," specifically thanking Ireland for its boundless beauty. The film is currently slated for release with a 'coming soon' tag. Meanwhile, Jackman's next project will see him star alongside Emma Thompson and Julia Louis-Dreyfus in the comedy The Sheep Detectives, set for release in May.
