A couple in California were astonished to discover a hidden message from the previous owners while renovating their bathroom. Alex and Jess Monney, who bought their San Jose home five years ago, decided to refurbish the bathroom, but their contractor found a note concealed behind the plasterboard.
The note, dated summer 1995, was from Mr and Mrs Shineski, who lived in the house 23 years ago. It read: "Hi! We’re the Shineski’s! We remodelled this bathroom summer 1995. If you're reading this, that means you're remodelling the bathroom again. What's wrong with the way we did it?!?!?" Alongside the message, the Shineskis included a photograph of themselves and their pet rabbit, Cassie.
Monney shared the note on social media, where it quickly went viral, amassing over 80,000 likes on Twitter within 24 hours and sparking interest on Reddit, where users attempted to track down the former homeowners. The discovery has inspired the Monneys to leave their own message before completing the renovation.
Other social media users responded with tales of their own hidden finds, including a stack of Playboy magazines discovered in a bathroom wall and a 1970s beer can left by builders.
