The Guardian has introduced a new film quiz, inviting movie enthusiasts to test their knowledge. The quiz, created with input from devoted puzzler and film critic Anne Billson, aims to strike a balance between challenging and accessible questions.
Billson, a self-confessed quiz addict who regularly tackles Wordle and the Guardian's own Thursday quiz, jumped at the chance to set questions. She initially found the task harder than expected, with early sample questions proving too difficult. 'I had trouble answering them myself a few weeks later,' she admitted.
The quiz covers a wide range of cinema, from classic films to modern releases, with an emphasis on diversity. Billson ensured a mix of actors and genres, avoiding over-reliance on contemporary stars like Adam Driver. However, she noted the challenge of including non-white actors from earlier decades, citing Sidney Poitier and Toshiro Mifune as examples.
Billson sees quizzes as a form of escapism, allowing participants to forget 'horrible headlines' and daily stresses. She encourages readers to try the quiz, cheat if necessary, but notes it's 'probably more fun if you don't.'
