Spain star Gavi has stated that Argentina's players should not be punished by FIFA for their actions after the World Cup final. The Barcelona star, who was an unused substitute in the 1-0 win, was among those heavily involved in the brawls as he was launched to the floor by Leandro Paredes.
FIFA investigation into Argentina conduct
Defender Nahuel Molina and coach Roberto Ayala also appeared to throw punches, but none were shown a red card for their actions. FIFA have since confirmed an investigation into their conduct, but Gavi believes they should not face any sanctions.
Speaking back in his home town of Los Palacios y Villafranca, as per Marca, he said: "No, to be honest, I don't think they should be suspended. I understand it's not a good example for children, but there's also a more violent side to football.
"Perhaps the most logical thing for me would be to send them off during the match, but as I said, in the end I think it's all football and that's how it has to be."
Celebrations and social media statements
Gavi was joined by fellow local Fabian Ruiz and to mark their achievement, the two players were given their body weight in tomatoes. That saw Gavi receive 68.5kg and the Paris Saint-Germain star get 84.5kg.
While Spain's players provided their public World Cup verdicts during celebrations and parades, several Argentina stars have instead chosen to post lengthy statements on social media. Lionel Messi, Cristian Romero, Paredes and most-recently Lisandro Martinez have all delivered emotional messages. The latter and Argentina's captain both congratulated Spain but the Manchester United star, who went off injured in the final, also appeared to aim a subtle dig.
Part of the caption on his Instagram post read: "I want to congratulate Spain on their well-deserved title. And to our people I want to tell you that the result does not define the journey.
"We went through adversity, we made what seemed impossible possible and we never find excuses, we only find reasons to keep going.
"We defend our colours far beyond the court and share unforgettable moments in the national team, together with our families and with the unconditional support of all Argentinians. It will always be a huge pride to represent them.
"Remember that 'the fall of the great is the happiness of the mediocre'. Thank you very much to all. Let's take care of our country. I love you Argentina!"
