Fans Beg BBC to Bring Back 'Gentleman Jack'

Period drama enthusiasts are urging the BBC to revive what they describe as the "best thing" on television. The broadcaster recently posted a nostalgic clip from the acclaimed series Gentleman Jack, sparking a wave of requests for its return.

The Show and Its Setting

Set in 1830s Yorkshire, Gentleman Jack is based on the real-life diaries of Anne Lister, portrayed by Suranne Jones. Lister, a landowner and industrialist, is remembered as one of the first openly gay women in British history. Her primary love interest in the series is Anne Walker, played by Sophie Rundle.

The narrative follows Lister's daily life at Shibden Hall, her family estate in Halifax. She inherited the property and oversaw its redesign, hiring a local architect to add Gothic features and gardens.

Series Synopsis

The official synopsis reads: "It's 1832 in West Yorkshire, England -- the cradle of the evolving Industrial Revolution -- where landowner Anne Lister is determined to save her faded ancestral home, Shibden Hall, even if it means bucking society's expectations. In addition to reopening the coal mines, a part of Lister's plan to help her family is to marry well. But the charismatic, single-minded Lister -- who dresses head-to-toe in black and charms her way into high society -- has no intention of marrying a man."

Created by Sally Wainwright, the show first aired in 2019 and garnered widespread critical acclaim. Both seasons boast a remarkable 92% rating from Rotten Tomatoes critics.
