The real-life couple
Marcos Matsunaga was the wealthy heir to his family's Yoki food business. He and Elize lived a life of luxury in São Paulo. Despite his business success, Marcos was described by friends as awkward and insecure around women.
Elize had a harrowing childhood but built a better life as a nurse. She met Marcos through an escort service, and friends called her 'a Cinderella who, in marrying Marcos, had become a princess', according to Radio Times. The couple had a baby daughter at the time of the murder.
The murder and aftermath
On May 19, 2012, Elize confronted Marcos about her suspicions of infidelity, which she had hired a private investigator to confirm. She shot him, then dismembered his body. Initially she reported him missing, but later confessed, claiming it was a crime of passion over his alleged infidelity.
Convicted in 2016, she was sentenced to nearly 20 years, later reduced to 16 years. She has been on parole since 2022, having served 10 years of her sentence.
