Disney Scraps Live-Action Robin Hood Remake, Director Confirms

Disney has abandoned its planned live-action remake of the 1973 animated classic Robin Hood, according to director Carlos López Estrada. The filmmaker revealed the news during a Reddit AMA, stating, “It’s dead, sadly.”

Estrada described the project as having “something really special (and original!)” with “extraordinary music” already developed. He added that he “keep[s] daydreaming about doing it independently with different characters.”

The remake was announced in 2020 as a live-action and CGI hybrid, with Kari Granlund attached to write the script. Granlund previously worked on Disney’s 2019 live-action Lady and the Tramp.

During the same AMA, Estrada reflected on his experience co-directing Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon (2021), calling it “so special and so hard.” He noted he was the first person of colour to lead a directing department at Disney, but “lasted only a few years there.”

Disney continues to develop other live-action remakes, including Tangled, Moana, and Hercules, despite mixed reception to recent releases like Snow White.
