Hollywood icons Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire made a stylish appearance together at an exclusive, star-studded gathering in London's affluent Mayfair district on Thursday night. The long-time friends, both aged 51 and 50 respectively, were spotted leaving the lavish townhouse venue in high spirits after celebrating the launch of their new film, One Battle After Another.
A Night of Celebrations in the Capital
The Titanic legend, Leonardo DiCaprio, opted for a discreet look, wearing a dark coat and a matching baseball cap as he departed the event. Earlier, he had been enjoying a Warner Bros bash at the Hart Pub in Marylebone. His close companion, Spider-Man star Tobey Maguire, was seen offering his support as the duo exited the luxurious location.
The celebrations weren't confined to one venue. At the Hart Pub, DiCaprio mingled with a roster of Hollywood legends and rock royalty. He was photographed rubbing shoulders with Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, esteemed actors Jeremy Irons and Pierce Brosnan, and the film's director, Paul Thomas Anderson, 55.
Promoting a Cinematic Masterpiece
The festivities followed a promotional event for the film on Wednesday, where DiCaprio attended an 'in-conversation' session at BFI Southbank. He was joined on stage by director Paul Thomas Anderson and moderator Edith Bowman. For the occasion, The Wolf of Wall Street actor dressed sharply in a tailored blazer layered over a matching brown shirt and trousers.
During the conversation, DiCaprio shared insights into his long-gestating collaboration with Anderson. He recalled their early, vague discussions about a potential project, noting the director's meticulous nature. 'He puts a tremendous amount of thought into what he does,' DiCaprio said of Anderson. He described a memorable visit to the director's home in Tarzana, Los Angeles, and a strangely empty restaurant that felt 'almost out of The Shining', where their ideas began to solidify into a script.
Acclaim for 'One Battle After Another'
The film at the heart of these celebrations, One Battle After Another, is already generating significant buzz. Loosely based on Thomas Pynchon's 1990 novel Vineland, the action-thriller has been met with universal five-star reviews and is being touted as 'the defining film of a generation'.
The plot sees DiCaprio playing Bob Ferguson, a dishevelled revolutionary living in stoned paranoia off-grid with his daughter, Willa. The story follows Bob as he reconnects with old allies on a mission to find his daughter, guided by his sensei, played by Benicio Del Toro. The high-stakes thriller and black comedy also features Sean Penn as Bob's evil nemesis, Col. Steven J. Lockjaw, and Regina Hall as revolutionary Deandra.
The critical reception has been extraordinary. Filmmaking legend Steven Spielberg lavished praise on the project, stating, 'What an insane movie, oh my God.' He highlighted the film's relentless action and bizarre yet relevant themes, suggesting it could lead to Academy Award recognition for Anderson.
The Telegraph's Robbie Collin awarded the film five stars, calling it 'electrifyingly improbable' and a 'sprawling Dr Strangelove-style satire'. He praised Anderson's confidence in the audience and the film's roller-coaster ending, which leaves viewers 'shaky and elated'.
