Triple Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis has retired from acting twice and returned twice. With his son Ronan's debut film Anemone on the horizon, we look back at the actor's entire filmography.
Day-Lewis's first film role came at age 14 in John Schlesinger's bisexual love-triangle drama Sunday Bloody Sunday, where he briefly appears scratching car paintwork with a broken bottle. His early career also included a small part in Gandhi as a racist thug intimidating the title character, and a role in The Bounty where he was furiously reprimanded by Anthony Hopkins.
In the 1990s, Day-Lewis starred in The Crucible, Arthur Miller's adaptation of his play about the Salem witch trials. He played farmer John Proctor, who pays a heavy price for an affair with young Abigail (Winona Ryder). During filming, he met Miller's daughter Rebecca, whom he married in 1996.
For The Boxer, Day-Lewis trained under Barry McGuigan, boxing twice daily for nearly three years to play an IRA soldier who returns to boxing after 14 years in prison. The film marked his first retirement, after which he did not make another film for five years.
Day-Lewis also tried his hand at comedy in Stars and Bars, playing a prim English art expert in the American south, and Eversmile, New Jersey, as an over-zealous Irish travelling dentist in Argentina. Critics noted that wackiness was not his forte.
His only widely acknowledged dud was Nine, the movie adaptation of the Broadway musical of Fellini's 8½. Surrounded by a stellar female cast, Day-Lewis struggled with the light touch required for the role of Guido, the bewildered auteur.
