Dan Walker made a poignant return to the BBC to take part in the final episode of Football Focus, which aired its last show after more than 50 years on air. The long-running football magazine programme, which began in 1974, concluded with nearly 2,000 episodes, as confirmed by the BBC in late April.
During the tribute segment, Walker, who presented the show from 2009 to 2021 before leaving for Channel 5 in 2022, reflected on the programme's legacy. 'There were score lines, hot lines and punch lines. There was sadness and desolate days when football was trivial,' he said, adding that despite changes, 'the routine remained the same.' He singled out the episode filmed in Afghanistan at Camp Bastion as his favourite, calling it 'one of the best things I've ever been involved in.'
Current host Alex Scott was visibly emotional as she introduced the final show, thanking fellow presenters for their contributions. 'Here we go for the last time, hello and welcome to Football Focus, we are bringing the curtain down today on the longest running football magazine show,' she said, before welcoming veteran pundit Garth Crooks. Scott later admitted that the tributes had thrown her off, struggling to process that it was her last show.
The BBC explained that the decision to end Football Focus was driven by changing audience behaviours. A statement read: 'Fans are now increasingly consuming football content in different ways and we need to respond appropriately as we face difficult decisions around how the licence fee is spent.' The broadcaster noted that viewers are accessing discussion, highlights, and analysis through digital platforms and on-demand viewing, prompting a shift in how BBC Sport delivers football coverage across television, radio, and online.
