Both the illuminated roof and the nature sounds are entirely artificial, creating an environment intended to evoke calm and familiarity for residents, yet it also fosters an eerie, uncanny atmosphere.

Film-maker Nathalie Berger's observational documentary delves into the parallel lives of the inhabitants and their caregivers, uncovering genuine love and care within this strange simulacrum of home. Captured in static vignettes, life at the Lantern appears tranquil on the surface, with retirees coexisting in a resigned harmony. However, some residents express bewilderment about their presence in a care home, while others are confused about their location, revealing moments of quiet turmoil framed with sobering matter-of-factness.

Unlike the residents, the care staff predominantly consists of Black women. Berger examines this contrast without didacticism, highlighting the subtle chasm of racial and socioeconomic hierarchy.
