Call The Midwife Star 'Heartbroken' Over Exit, Shares Move

Megan Cusack, known for her role as Nurse Nancy Corrigan in the beloved BBC period drama Call The Midwife, has spoken candidly about her “heartbreaking” departure from the series. The actress, who had been a regular cast member since season 10, admitted she was “devastated” when her time on the show came to an end after season 14 last year.

A Leap of Faith Into Theatre

In an interview with Radio Times, Cusack revealed that she made the difficult decision to leave because she wanted to pursue theatre work again. “I made the choice because I wanted to try and get into theatre again, but it doesn’t mean that it wasn’t heartbreaking not being there,” she explained. Reflecting on the transition, she described it as a “mad kind of change,” adding that filming for seven months a year meant she saw her co-stars more than her own family and partner. “You do start to feel like it’s a home,” she said.

Emotional Farewell

Cusack recalled her last day on set with raw emotion: “I bawled my eyes out on my last day. I was absolutely devastated, but the nice thing was knowing that it wasn’t the last time I was seeing people. It’s just a change in work life.” Her character, Nurse Nancy Corrigan, exited Nonnatus House after falling in love, accepting a marriage proposal, and taking on a new job.

What’s Next for Call The Midwife?

While the latest season has concluded, fans can look forward to an upcoming prequel series, a feature film, and a new series. Creator and writer Heidi Thomas teased the projects, which were announced last year. “The opening of new doors at Nonnatus House feels profoundly emotional, and yet just right,” she said. “I have never run out of stories for our midwives, and I never will.” The prequel will explore the Blitz years in the East End, promising familiar faces in younger forms. Meanwhile, the film will see the regular cast test themselves in an unfamiliar landscape, with hospital births and NHS changes shaping their journey. Call The Midwife is available on BBC iPlayer.
