Netflix has quietly added the British crime thriller The Critic, a 2023 film starring Gemma Arterton and Ian McKellen. The film is set in 1930s London and follows a young actress, Nina Land (Arterton), who becomes entangled in a dangerous blackmail scheme orchestrated by a feared theatre critic, Jimmy Erskine (McKellen).
The film is based on Anthony Quinn's 2015 novel Curtain Call and has been described by viewers as a “breathtaking piece of filmmaking” with a “devilish plot”. One IMDb user called it “a most colourful, but also dark and foggy production about success, secrets and death”.
Arterton currently stars in ITV's espionage thriller Secret Service as MI5 officer Kate Henderson. While fans await the next episode, they can watch her in The Critic, which also features Alfred Enoch, Ben Barnes, Lesley Manville, and Romola Garai.
