Marvel has announced that Black Panther 3 will be released, with British actor David Jonsson playing the titular hero. Ryan Coogler is returning to direct, and Letitia Wright will reprise her role as Shuri, alongside Winston Duke as M'Baku.
Jonsson to play son of T'Challa
Jonsson will take on the role of Black Panther, also known as T'Challa, who will be the son of the character of the same name originally played by the late Chadwick Boseman. Welcoming Jonsson on stage at San Diego Comic-Con, where the sequel was announced, Coogler said: “The last time we got to make a movie, we introduced a character who is the son of the character that the great Chadwick Boseman played – our T’Challa – in that film. And today, I want to tell you that in this next film, he grows up, he comes of age.”

Jonsson added: “I want to say thank you so much, thank you Ryan, thank you Kevin (Feige, president of Marvel Studios), thank you to this amazing family that I have the honour and the privilege and the blessing to join. I actually don’t want to say too much because I want to let the screen do the talking. But believe me, the honour is entirely mine.”
Release date and background
The film will be released in US cinemas on December 15 2028, with a UK release date yet to be confirmed. Coogler first brought the fictional African country of Wakanda to the big screen in 2018 with Black Panther, followed by the 2022 sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, two years after Boseman died at age 43 from colon cancer in 2020. That sequel followed Wright's character Shuri as she took on the role of Black Panther after Boseman's character T'Challa died. The Black Panther character has also appeared in other MCU films including Captain America: Civil War (2016) and Avengers: Infinity War (2018). Coogler also directed two series set in the Black Panther universe: Ironheart and Eyes Of Wakanda. Jonsson has starred in BBC and HBO series Industry and films including Rye Lane (2023), Alien: Romulus (2024), and The Long Walk (2025).
