Ben Hillman, presenter of A Place in the Sun, confessed he had failed after a challenging property search for a couple looking to relocate to Spain. The episode, originally aired as a repeat on Wednesday, August 5, saw Ben assisting Clacton-on-Sea couple Deb and Steve in their quest for a new home.
A Tough Search in Spain
The couple, planning to sell their UK home and retire abroad after numerous holidays in Spain, had a budget of £150,000. They sought a two-bedroom, two-bathroom property close to the beach, bars, and restaurants. Deb emphasized the need for a permanent residence, stating, "Because it's a permanent move, I don't want a holiday home, I want a house." She also desired a modern property with good curb appeal.
Properties Fail to Impress
Despite Ben's efforts, the couple remained unimpressed with the properties shown and ultimately made no offers. Following the viewings, Ben admitted, "They were looking for the perfect forever home, and I'm afraid to say, I've failed to find it for them. I hope I can steer them in the right direction." He later told the buyers, "We were exhausted, we did a lot, we saw a lot."
Deb and Steve's Reaction
Deb expressed a desire to explore other parts of Almeria, noting, "We've only scratched the surface, we need to see more." Steve added, "We would make compromises for the right property." Deb elaborated, "I think, when you find the house you want, there might be something missing, but if you like it that much, you're going to compromise because you want that house anyway." When asked if they found anything they loved, they replied, "There was a couple we really liked but it wasn't enough, it wasn't quite right."
Future Plans
The couple vowed to return and rent for a few months, with Ben expressing confidence, "I'm confident the right house is out there and waiting for you so I wish you all the best when you come back out here next time." A Place in the Sun is available to watch on Channel 4.
