The 79th Cannes Film Festival may appear to be a glamorous party, but actress Blanca Blanco has shared with the Daily Mail the lesser-known aspects of this prestigious event. Behind the scenes, the festival is a highly secured affair with armed guards, mounted police, and motorcycle officers maintaining order.
Security and Access
All guests must arrive by car, even if their hotel is directly opposite the venue, as vehicles serve as placeholders for timing and entry. ID badges are mandatory, and security checks are rigorous. 'There are men with guns at every turn, the police presence is very much felt,' Blanco noted.
Long Waits and Strict Rules
Attendees often endure hours-long queues, with women in high heels and elaborate outfits waiting in heat and noise. The red carpet is a fast-paced affair: stars have less than a minute to pose before being moved along. 'You can't pause on the carpet and talk to people, you have to pose and then move on, it's like clockwork,' Blanco explained. Cell phones are prohibited, so no selfies are allowed.
No Snacks Inside Theaters
Unlike typical cinemas, no popcorn, soda, or candy is offered during screenings. 'The first time I went, I was expecting popcorn with butter and a Coke, but nope, it is simply not available,' Blanco said. This policy prevents mess and saves cleanup time.
After-Parties and Crowds
Post-screening parties along the Croisette involve additional security and lines. The town is packed with around 40,000 festivalgoers, causing heavy traffic. Hotels require ID for entry, and even glam teams need QR codes to access rooms. Blanco noted a unique security measure: a falcon employed by a hotel to keep pigeons and seagulls away.
Influencers and Paparazzi
Thousands of influencers film content outside hotels and the red carpet, competing for prime spots. 'It's weird to see so many people filming themselves... no one knows who these people are,' Blanco remarked. Paparazzi are omnipresent, especially outside the Majestic Hotel.
VIP Perks
The wealthy often arrive by helicopter, a status symbol. 'That is the ultimate brag, that you took a helicopter, not a car or train,' Blanco said. Yacht parties are also common, with guests hopping between vessels to network or enjoy free drinks.
The Cannes Film Festival concludes on Saturday, May 23.
