An American woman visiting the UK has declared that the batter on traditional British fish and chips is 'way better' than what she is used to back home. Dixie, who was introduced to the iconic dish by expat Kalani Smith at the Jolly Cricketers pub in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, was instantly impressed by the light texture of the batter.
Kalani, an American living in the UK, regularly posts TikTok videos reviewing British cuisine. He took Dixie to the pub, which serves fish and chips exclusively on Mondays and Tuesdays, after receiving strong recommendations. Upon arrival, Dixie made several faux pas, referring to chips as 'fries' and asking for ranch dressing, which is not commonly stocked in British chip shops.
After Kalani demonstrated the proper technique for adding salt and vinegar, Dixie tasted the dish and remarked: 'That's good. That is so good. I love that this batter is not as heavy as our fried fish at home would be.' She also enjoyed the tartar sauce and mushy peas, noting that the tartar sauce looked different but tasted as expected. Kalani observed that the sauce appeared freshly made, contributing to its richer flavour.
By the end of the meal, Dixie proclaimed it the 'best fried fish' she had ever tasted. The video, posted on National Fish and Chip Day (June 5th), drew comments from viewers who teased Dixie's Americanisms, with one noting Kalani seemed to be 'running out of patience'. However, another defended her, reminding viewers that Kalani was once a newcomer too.
