Alex Jones has opened up about her early fears of pursuing a presenting career, as The One Show celebrates its 20th anniversary. The Welsh host, who has been part of the show since 2010, shared her memories of growing up in South Wales and the moment she first stepped onto the famous green sofa.
A Dream Kept Secret
Reflecting on her childhood, Jones admitted she always wanted to be a presenter but was too afraid to voice it. "When I was a little girl growing up in South Wales, I thought I'd like to be a presenter but I was too scared to say anything because nobody in South Wales became broadcasters, especially not on national television," she said.
Her first show in 2010 remains vivid in her mind, with Whoopi Goldberg as a guest. "I remember my first show like it was last week. In many ways it feels like I've been here a matter of months, not 16 years, because time flies," Jones recalled.
Proud Moments and Longevity
When asked about her proudest achievement on the show, Jones cited her enduring presence. "I'm most proud of the fact that I'm still here because to have a job that you not only love but you're really proud to do is rare over the stretch of time that I've been here," she explained.
The show has adapted to changes in viewing habits, and Jones noted its resilience. "It has withstood so many changes in trends, changes in the way people watch TV or whatever, it still stands and stays relevant. It's still really strong in the ratings and I think it would be really missed if it wasn't there at 7pm."
The One Show marks its 20th anniversary with a week of special programmes starting Friday, August 14, featuring celebrity guests and memorable moments. The show airs weekdays at 7pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
