Adam Frost on Bittersweet Move: Leaving Garden Brings Joy

Adam Frost Reflects on Bittersweet House Move

Gardeners' World presenter Adam Frost has offered a fresh perspective on moving house, explaining why leaving a beloved garden can be a positive experience. Nine months after relocating with his wife and children, Frost shared an emotional update about returning to his former home and seeing the new owners enjoy the garden he created.

In a video with BBC Gardeners' World Magazine, Frost advised others facing a similar move not to worry. He said: "If you're leaving your house and you've gotta leave the garden that you've loved for a long period of time... if you're like me, I wouldn't worry about it at all, I've done exactly that. We left in October, what have I taken with me? Probably a few little bits I dug and divided, contained them. And then obviously I took all my pots with me. Outside of that, I haven't bothered."

Joy in Passing on a Garden

Frost described visiting the couple who bought his previous home. "I went back to see the couple that have bought the garden and I walked around with them and they are absolutely loving it. And I think that's a great thing to hold on to, is the fact that maybe you've just left somebody else a whole load of joy."

The BBC star has been sharing glimpses of his renovation project since moving late last year. While the exact location and reason for this move remain unclear, Frost has previously discussed why his family downsized in 2022.

Previous Downsizing Due to Health Issues

Frost and his wife Sulina previously lived in an 18th-century farmhouse in Lincolnshire with sprawling grounds. However, after serious health issues affected family members, including Sulina's battle with sepsis, they chose to downsize to a smaller property with a more manageable garden. This allowed Frost to dedicate more time to his family while reducing the burden of maintaining a large estate.

Frost, who lives with Fibromyalgia—a condition affecting around 2.5 million people in the UK—has spoken candidly about managing the illness. Speaking last year, he said: "The reality is, I'm 20 years on so yeah I've got it, but I deal with it. But, the great thing about making that film is the amount of people that have stopped me and said, 'I've got it, thanks for speaking out'. And I've done something for the charity now and bits and pieces. I manage it through fitness really to be honest, and trying to find a little balance of life, which is not always that easy, but yeah, [I'm] good."

Gardening as Therapy

The horticulturist has also been open about his battles with depression, acknowledging gardening as a healing activity. He said: "I think if we all gardened, the world would be a better place. [It's good for your] mental health, physical health, and what's great now is, it's actually being prescribed by the NHS and there's gardens starting to be created in different places, that are either being used by the NHS or they're being run by charities."

Frost appears on Sunday Brunch alongside his podcast co-star Caitlin Moran today from 10am.
