Zoe Ball on Grief After Losing Three Loved Ones: 'It Breaks My Heart'
Zoe Ball: 'It Breaks My Heart' After Losing Three Loved Ones

BBC Radio 2 presenter Zoe Ball has opened up about the profound grief she has experienced following the deaths of three loved ones over 14 years: her mother Julia Peckham, her former partner Billy Yates, and her stepdad Rick. The 55-year-old offered heartfelt advice to listeners facing similar heartbreak, emphasizing that brighter days will eventually come.

Sharing Personal Loss on the Dig It Podcast

During the latest episode of her podcast with Jo Whiley, Dig It, Ball reflected on the messages she has received from fans who have also lost loved ones to pancreatic cancer, motor neurone disease (MND), or suicide. She said: 'I think sometimes when you lose someone in a similar way... I know lots of people have spoken to me about relatives who have had pancreatic cancer, as they knew that my mum had had pancreatic cancer. And people have spoken to me about MND because we lost our stepdad to MND. And losing Billy, a lot of people have spoken to me when they've gone through loss in that way and people reach out and it breaks my heart to know someone else will go through that.'

Raising Awareness of Motor Neurone Disease

Ball first began raising awareness of MND in 2012 after her stepdad died from the condition. According to the NHS, MND is a life-shortening disease that causes progressive muscle weakness and currently has no cure, though treatments can help manage symptoms. Ball's advocacy has helped shed light on the devastating impact of the disease.

Finding Comfort After Billy Yates' Death

In 2017, Ball suffered another devastating loss when her former partner, BBC cameraman Billy Yates, died by suicide at age 40. In an earlier episode of Dig It, she revealed that staying close to his family and friends has brought her tremendous comfort. 'Losing Billy, you know, I've been so lucky to have all of his wonderful family and friends stay really close,' she said. 'And it's great to see his nieces and nephews doing so brilliantly at life and his friends who really, really, make me laugh. Those people who you can be with who share that kind of love and essence of someone that you've lost.'

Grieving Her Mother and Stepping Back from Work

Ball's mother, Julia Peckham, died in 2024 at age 74 after battling pancreatic cancer. The loss prompted Ball to take time away from work before stepping down from the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show later that year. Reflecting on her grief journey, she offered reassurance to listeners: 'What you can find comfort [in] is the people further along in that grieving journey. You'll find people who have gone through exactly what you're going through and they will understand exactly what you're going through at that moment, because they've been there. But hopefully they'll be able to see that in time and you take as long as you need in those journeys. And it's so tough but further down the line, you will find happiness again and you will find joy again, that will happen.'
