The Yorkshire Vet star Chris Jeffery has announced the death of his beloved dog Peggy in a heartbreaking social media post. The farmer, a regular on the Channel 5 lifestyle programme and a close friend of Julian Norton, shared the news with fans this week.
Emotional tribute to Peggy
Writing on Instagram, Chris said: “Night night Peggy. You’ve been with me through thick and thin. My best friend. I’m heartbroken. RIP little girl.” Alongside the caption, he shared a series of sweet pictures of Peggy, including one of her relaxing in his arms, as well as images of her frolicking in the grass and in the sea.
Fans quickly piled into the comments section to show their support. One penned: “Ohh Farmer Chris I’m so sorry, we all loved Peggy. Sending you lots of love.” Another said: “I’m so sorry to read this. Dogs really are man’s best friend. Sending love.”
Support from fans
While a third posted: “Aww Farmer Chris I’m so sorry. She’ll be running free over the Rainbow Bridge with my Poppy, who was a Jack Russell too. They’ll be having lots of fun together. Thinking of you.” Another fan added: “Oh gosh Chris, I’m so so sorry. They leave such a hole in our lives. Sending love and hugs.”
Sadly, it isn’t the only loss Chris has faced. He lost his wife Kate to cancer in 2023. She had been moved into St Leonard’s Hospice in York, and Chris later sold his family cow Primrose to raise money for the hospice.
Previous tragedy
He told the BBC at the time: “This was her little cow, she loved her to bits, and I know she'd be looking down on me today and saying 'hey, well done'. St Leonard's Hospice so deserve this after the care they gave her and me.”
Kate was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022, and Chris said: “The final three weeks of her life were truly awful, but the carers from St Leonard’s were so kind, reliable, compassionate and lovely people. I just don’t know what we would have done without the place.”
Chris wasn’t able to continue maintaining the farm without Kate at his side, and ended up selling the property and all the livestock. He said: “We were having just the most lovely life with our cattle, sheep and pigs. I decided that I couldn't and didn't want to do it on my own. So I decided to sell the farm and sell the animals and move away.”
