Former X Factor contestant Lucy Spraggan has announced she is getting married to her partner Emilia Smith in June, with Simon Cowell set to walk her down the aisle. The singer shared the news on Instagram, revealing that Cowell, who created the X Factor, agreed to the honour during a holiday.
Spraggan told the Sun's Fabulous Magazine that she and Smith were on a plane to stay with Cowell when she suggested they get married. 'One morning, Simon was about to get in the sea and I said "Will you give me away?", and he replied "Yeah!"', she recounted. The couple formally recognised their engagement a few weeks later, with Spraggan proposing in front of Smith's family.
The pair have been friends for a decade before realising their feelings. In an Instagram post, Spraggan said: 'when you know, you know.' The wedding will take place at the Savoy hotel in London, described as a lavish ceremony.
Spraggan's friendship with Cowell developed after she waived her anonymity in 2023 to speak about her rape during the 2012 series of X Factor. She said Cowell apologised to her, saying: 'Lucy, before you or I say anything else, the first thing I need to tell you is that I am sorry.' Spraggan noted that no one else had said sorry, and that Cowell's apology meant a lot.
At the time of her departure from the show, illness was cited as the reason. The singer has since called for better protections for reality TV participants. ITV and Fremantle, the production company, said they were evolving their duty of care processes.
