Wrexham's social media team suffered an embarrassing blunder while trying to tease Liverpool ahead of their upcoming friendly in New York. The Red Dragons have enjoyed a strong pre-season, beating Manchester United 1-0 in Helsinki and coming from behind to defeat Leeds United 3-2 in Tampa, Florida.
The ill-timed post
Liverpool had shared a video on X showing the Empire State Building lit in red, with the caption: "The Empire State Building is lit up for the Reds." Wrexham's admin responded with a tongue-in-cheek tweet: "I think this might have been for us..." accompanied by an eyes emoji. However, they failed to notice that the building was illuminated in dark red to promote Liverpool's new away kit. The original video from the Empire State Building Observation Deck page clearly stated: "It's a Liverpool red kind of night! Celebrating the 2026/27 away kit reveal."
Reaction from fans
Liverpool supporters quickly mocked Wrexham's post. One fan commented: "If you made it to the Prem (Premier League), potentially." Another joked: "You should be thankful you play Liverpool," while a third reshared the Empire State X page and remarked: "So this is awkward."
Wrexham's pre-season and Ryan Reynolds' comments
Despite the gaffe, Wrexham have had a superb pre-season. Ahead of the clash, co-owner Ryan Reynolds expressed excitement about facing Liverpool at Yankee Stadium. He said: "We're not only coming to America to play again, in what has always been the most exhilarating and exciting thing to see live, but to do it with three Premier League teams in a row in Tampa, New York and Philly is pretty amazing. You know, to have to play to host Liverpool in Yankee Stadium - with that kind of history and pedigree - I just don't know what to make of it. We cannot wait to fill that stadium, and watch the boys out there just do what they do best. I mean, it's always so electric and, you know, the 165-year plus history of Wrexham has seen its fair share of giant killings. Liverpool is as big as it gets, certainly on the world stage. So we're very excited to see what we can do."
