Worst Neighbor Ever: Harrowing 911 Call Reveals Dad Shot Dead

Netflix's latest true crime series, Worst Neighbor Ever, features a distressing 911 call in which a man witnesses his friend being shot dead by a neighbor. The episode, titled Fear Thy Neighbor, focuses on Jamal 'JT' Thomas, who terrorized his Oakland, California, neighborhood before killing Miles Armstead.

Background of the Case

Melina Armstead and her husband Miles bought a home in the diverse, working-class Eastmont Hills neighborhood of Oakland, California. They already had four children between them and were planning to welcome their first child together. Miles developed a friendship with Jamal Thomas, also known as JT, but when Thomas's family was evicted from their home, his behavior spiraled out of control.

The Reign of Terror

Following his eviction, JT returned to his former home and squatted in the garage while repeatedly harassing Miles and Melina. He threw rocks through their windows constantly, prompting endless calls to the police. Despite their efforts, the harassment escalated, forcing the Armsteads to move into a new apartment.

One day, Miles returned to their old neighborhood on an errand. JT was there and pulled out a gun, shooting Miles dead in the middle of the street. The shooting was witnessed by another neighbor and friend, Matt Guido, who made a harrowing 911 call played during the documentary.

The 911 Call

In the call, Matt Guido is heard in distress: 'He's done shot somebody up! He shot like 10 rounds! I don't know if somebody's hurt, man, this is bad.' The operator asked if he could see anyone on the ground, to which he screamed: 'Yes, he shot my neighbour! F***! Get back! Get back! He shot my neighbour, man! He killed my f****** neighbour! That m*****f***** killed my neighbour, man, it was JT!' Matt saw Miles lying on the ground and tried to help him, but he said, while in tears: 'He wasn't shaking, he wasn't breathing, he wasn't convulsing, he wasn't gasping. He was still, and then I knew he was dead.'

Aftermath and Sentencing

Melina Armstead recalled a strange feeling while working in their new apartment alone, and she knew instantly that something was wrong. She drove to their old home and discovered her husband, an expectant father, had been killed. In July 2024, Jamal Thomas was convicted of first-degree murder, and in April 2025, he was sentenced to 28.8 years to life in prison.

Worst Neighbor Ever is now streaming on Netflix.
