The World Cup has officially kicked off with thousands of fans from across the globe descending on the US, Mexico and Canada for the tournament. A total of 48 different teams, including Scotland and England, are hoping to take the trophy home. But aside from the action on the grass, it is often the action off the pitch that catches more headlines. Over the years, many of the footballers' wives and girlfriends have stolen the show, sometimes to the detriment of the team. In the past 20 years, WAGs have come to dominate World Cup headlines as they show up in all their glam glory supporting their partner's team. So, as the latest World Cup gets underway, Daily Star looks back at some of the most chic WAGs and how they turned attention away from the game and onto themselves.
Victoria Beckham
Posh Spice was one of the trailblazers of WAG fashion in the 2000s. Posh Spice Victoria has always been at the forefront of fashion even during husband David's matches. When the footballing great first met the singer he was playing for Manchester United, with Victoria cheering him on from the sidelines. As the years passed, Victoria's style completely changed as the pair settled down and started a family together. This included the infamous time when Posh brought a young Romeo to the game in 2003, all as she watched on wearing a lavish black leather outfit, with a dark pair of glasses and a large pair of hoop earrings.
Abbey Clancy
Blonde bombshell Abbey always stole the show when she showed up to support husband Peter Crouch. Blonde bombshell model Abbey Clancy would always show up to matches supporting her towering husband Peter Crouch. However, she often stole the limelight in glamorous outfits that got footie fans hot under the collar. She recently revisited her time as a high-profile WAG for a lavish new ad campaign which saw her strip off and let it all hang out. But writing in British Vogue earlier this month, she admitted she felt insecure she would not be able to compete with all the famous wives and girlfriends she went with.
Cheryl Cole
Cheryl's iconic black beret became a staple of 2000s fashion after she wore it pitchside. Cheryl was already at the top of her game with Girls Aloud when the 2006 World Cup got underway in Germany. But her marriage to former Arsenal and Chelsea star Ashley Cole introduced her to a different celebrity world of WAGs. Rocking a large pair of sunglasses, with voluminous hair, Cheryl was one of the main people to watch for WAG fashion. This culminated in her wearing some of the biggest designer clothes, including her iconic black beret together with Posh Spice herself.
Coleen Rooney
Scouser Coleen Rooney quickly became a style icon in 2006 with her casual yet lavish looks. Despite just being 20 at the time of the World Cup in 2006, Coleen Rooney quickly rose to be one of the most popular WAGs of the era. Known for her casual attire, she always added a touch of glam when she attended husband Wayne's games. But she was always renowned for her ability to look rough and ready, as well as glam with her evening gowns. With her highlighted blonde hair often done up into a messy bun, Coleen would spark trends in UK fashion including the French manicure.
Rebekah Vardy
Rebekah Vardy's hair became a staple of WAG looks throughout the years. While Coleen and Rebekah are hardly on speaking terms now, they were once very close and would often attend matches together. Rebekah's long luscious black locks were her standout feature as she always straightened her hair to look as glam as possible. Often pairing her looks with a huge pair of oversized sunglasses, Rebekah became the ultimate WAG. She always looked polished and chic, but made sure her ensemble had a big accessory, including her over-the-shoulder bags.
